A Win for Waterhead

Congratulations are in order for our Waterhead apartment community! Back in April, we entered Waterhead into the Multifamily Executive (MFE) Awards, an annual celebration of the apartment industry’s most innovative projects, people, and initiatives across the nation. And on September 13, company President Jeff Bush and Vice President Chris Petersen headed to Las Vegas, NV to attend the MFE Awards Ceremony and await the results of the competition. We are thrilled to announce that Waterhead was selected as a “Project of the Year” from nearly 300 entries within 13 categories, and was deemed “Grand Winner” in the Adaptive Reuse category!

Projects entered were judged based on their creativity, architecture, design quality, floor plan and site plan efficiency, and curb appeal. Waterhead was entered into the “Adaptive Reuse” project category as the building was converted from a centuries-old, historic corduroy mill in Lowell, MA into a modern residential community. Waterhead stood out to the jury for a variety of reasons, including the project’s innovative restoration process, commitment to sustainable building practices, collaboration with local government officials, and its dedication to preserving Waterhead’s industrial past.

Our team was committed to showcasing Waterhead’s history throughout every step of the project: the mill’s brick structure and facade were restored, wood beams and columns were refinished to display their original craftsmanship, and architectural elements that could not be repaired were replaced with historically accurate reproductions. Completed in 2020 following a 2019 acquisition, Waterhead features 71 studio and one-bedroom apartments with high-end finishes, energy-efficient upgrades, and luxe on-site amenities.

“We are honored to be recognized by Multifamily Executive for our work at Waterhead and for the opportunity to showcase the impact of reuse and renovation on a national stage. Waterhead represents a thoughtful development process that simultaneously celebrates a building’s history while looking ahead to its future.” - Jeff Bush, President of Heritage Properties
