Heritage Properties Shares Importance of Fire Prevention Month

Always focused on the safety and well-being of our residents, Heritage Properties is proud to share information regarding National Fire Prevention Month this October.

Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recognizes Fire Safety Month and Fire Prevention Week (October 5-11) to raise awareness about fire hazards and the importance of practicing fire safety, day-in and day-out. First started by Calvin Coolidge in 1925 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, Fire Prevention Week is on record as the longest running public health observance.

The NFPA’s theme this year is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Highlighting a commonly used item throughout homes – lithium-ion batteries – this year’s theme shares important tips to use these batteries safely and effectively. Found in many household devices, from smartphones and laptops to tools and e-bikes, these batteries are efficient and long-lasting, but can pose fire risks if they are damaged, overheated, overcharged, or stored improperly.

The NFPA encourages the following to buy, charge, and dispose of these batteries safely:

  • Buy only listed products that include a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab to make sure it meets safety standards.

  • Charge your devices safely by only using approved chargers from the manufacturer, charging on a hard surface, and not overcharging (always unplug or remove the battery once charged).

  • Dispose correctly by finding a safe recycling location near you. Lithium-ion batteries can’t be thrown in with your regular trash or recycling.

Additionally, Heritage Properties encourages all residents to refer to the checklist below to help prevent fires and be better prepared in case of an emergency:

  • No smoking: Smoking cigarettes are one of the leading causes of fires, which is why all Heritage Properties buildings are smoke-free communities.

  • Learn about your fire extinguishers: Know where all the fire extinguishers are located in your apartment and familiarize yourself with how to use them. You can find an instructional video here

  • Work together: When you see a fire in any building, contact 911 immediately. Once emergency responders determine that the area is safe, our team will do our best to help get residents back into their homes as quickly as possible.
