Heritage Properties Shares Checklist for Fire Prevention Month 2026
At Heritage Properties, the safety of our residents is always a top priority, and October is a great opportunity to revisit the tools and checklists that help prevent fires and prepare us for emergencies.
Every October, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recognizes Fire Prevention Week to help educate the public about fire risks and encourage safer practices at home. This year's campaign focuses on lithium-ion battery safety under the theme “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on, including phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and scooters. Although convenient and efficient, improper charging, damage, or excessive heat can create serious fire hazards. A few simple precautions can help reduce those risks.
The NFPA recommends these safety practices:
Stick with approved products and chargers. Look for products tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and use the charger recommended by the device manufacturer.
Choose a safe place to charge. Keep devices on a hard, flat surface away from bedding or upholstery.
Avoid unnecessary charging risks. Follow manufacturer's instructions and unplug devices when charging is complete.
Pay attention to battery warning signs. Unusual heat, swelling, leaking, or strange odors may indicate a damaged battery. Stop using the device if you notice these signs.
Dispose of batteries responsibly. Lithium-ion batteries should never go into household trash or regular recycling bins. Check local guidelines for an approved collection or recycling location.
Battery safety is just one part of preventing fires. Heritage Properties encourages residents to keep these additional safety measures in mind throughout the year:
Remember our smoke-free community policy! All Heritage Properties buildings are smoke-free communities.
Get familiar with fire safety equipment. Take time to learn where fire extinguishers and other safety equipment are located in your building.
Keep hallways and exits unobstructed. Avoid placing personal belongings in hallways, stairwells, or near exit doors.
Know your emergency plan. Identify the safest exits from your home and community.
Act quickly if a fire occurs. Call 911 immediately if you discover a fire.
At Heritage Properties, we're committed to helping maintain safe communities where residents can feel at home. Thank you for making fire prevention a shared priority this October and throughout the year.
